If you are receiving IPERS disability benefits and become reemployed, there may be an impact on your benefits. These impacts are described below.

Regular Disability Benefits

If you are receiving IPERS disability benefits, IPERS may ask you to certify that you are still eligible to receive Social Security disability or Railroad Retirement disability benefits each year. If you do not certify that you are still eligible, your IPERS disability benefits will be suspended if you are under age 55. If you are over age 55, your benefit amount will be reduced to the amount that you would have received without the disability provision applied to your benefit.

Special Service Disability Benefits

If you retire with Special Service disability benefits, complete a bona fide retirement and return to covered employment before age 55, your benefits will cease immediately. If you return to non-covered employment, your Special Service disability benefits will be limited according to the reemployment comparison amount formula. See the reemployment comparison amount formula on the disability benefits page for more information.
